Mustangs

Here we will try to give you as much detailed and most of all historically accurate background information as we can about the development of this iconic aircraft.

We start with the birth of the legend and the first of the many: the NA-73X prototype, which started with a promise of the people at North American Aviation to the British government, to develop a new fighter in just 120 days.

We'll cover the NA-73X, Mustang I and IA, A-36, P-51A through K version, the lightweight H-model, the F-82 Twin Mustang up to the last development of the Cavalier and Enforcer models.

Witness the birth of this American Warhorse...

Articles and stories about the men who became master of the Warhorse... the WWII fighter pilots who flew the P-51 Mustang in action over Europe and the Pacific.

Legendary men such as top P-51 Mustang ace Major George E. Preddy, Lt. Col. John C. Meyer, Col Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson, Col. John D. Landers, the Tuskegee Airmen and many others.

Two Mustang aces were Medal Of Honor recipients, the American military's highest decoration: Major James H. Howard in the ETO and Major William A. Shomo in the Pacific.

Although the topic is "aces high", we are ot only focusing on the P-51 aces here because every fighter pilot who flew during the War deserves to get recognized for what they did. There were many brave men who didn't get the change to get to 5 kills before giving the ultimate sacrifice. They all have one thing in common here though: they all flew the Mustang in combat.

More and more P-51's are being restored to date and the level of detail and accuracy is ever increasing.

In this section you will be able to read and learn about some of those magnificently restored machines with names such as Cripes A' Mighty, Lopes Hope, Ina The Macon Belle, Gentlemen Jim, Crazy Horse, Old Crow, ...

Follow their resurrection story and read some background information about the paint schemes and the original pilots who flew with that paint scheme in World War 2.

Sources & disclaimer

Many reading and research has gone into the above articles and in the history of various bomber, fighter & transport units depicted in the USAAF section.

There are a ton of books & resources available on the P-51 and going through all of those is nearly impossible. Some sources also contain inconsistency in their data and we have tried to provide you with the most accurate data possible.

Besides obviously the pictures taken by ourselves (which are marked with our copyright), all of the pictures used within the articles are regarded free of copyright or are published with permission from their author. If there should be a picture in one of the articles that is not free of copyright, please notify us and it will be removed promptly or be given the correct copyright tag.
